The story of a Japanese teenager in the 1920s whose life is charted out for him as a family heir within his lineage—an “other-oriented” role that creates a family link between the past and the future. He experiences culture shock when he visits the United States with his father and makes friends with an American sailor who takes him out for a night of 1920s frolicking and questions the young man’s Japanese values.
